Installation Abstract from Peer to Peer Seminar Protocol Protocol is the format or standards that enable machines to talk to each other. Protocols: 1) NetBEUI -(NetBIOS Extended User Interface) Pronounced "net-booey." The transport layer for NetBIOS. NetBIOS and NetBEUI were originally part of a single protocol suite that was later separated. NetBIOS sessions can be transported over NetBEUI, TCP/IP and SPX/IPX protocols. 2) IPX - (Internetwork Packet EXchange) A NetWare communications protocol used to route messages from one node to another. IPX packets include network addresses and can be routed from one network to another. An IPX packet can occasionally get lost when crossing networks, thus IPX does not guarantee delivery of a complete message. Either the application has to provide that control or NetWare's SPX protocol must be used. 3) TCP/IP - (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) A communications protocol developed under contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to internetwork dissimilar systems. Invented by Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn, this de facto UNIX standard is the protocol of the Internet and has become the global standard for communications. Import of Protocols: Members of a Workgroup must use the same Protocol. If they don't use the same Protocol, they only can talk to each other indirectly via another workgroup that speaks their language and that of the foreign workgroup. Installation My Computer/ Control Panel/ Network/ Configuration tab/ Add.. Client - select Microsoft Networks Protocol - select Microsoft, then NetBEUI Dial-Up Adapter - Client for Microsoft File and Print Sharing - yes ........Identification tab/ Computer name - create unique name (cannot be the same as any other machine in the workgroup) Workgroup - every machine in the workgroup must have the EXACT same workgroup name here, or they will not be able to communicate. Sharing drives/directories My Computer/right-click on C: Drive/ Properties/ Sharing tab Shared Access type - select option Once the resource has been changed to be shared, the icon for the resource will have a small hand over it. Printers that are not local will have a bar across the icon, the hand for shared. A remote printer can be set as default. Verify the change in access by clicking on Network Neighborhood. It will list the resources available to that machine. It also lists "self" to show the resources that you are sharing. e.g. 486DX C (the 486 C:) 486DX CD (CD ROM on same)
